Tax Planning Advisor

This is a full-time position with the option to be based out of either our North Bennington or Saratoga Springs office.

The Opportunity

This is a newly created role designed to bring proactive, integrated tax planning inside the firm as a client-facing service offering.

You will not simply prepare returns — you will be a trusted advisor who helps clients make better financial decisions through a tax lens throughout the year. Tax preparation is part of the role, but planning is the heart of it.

You will join a firm that is growing steadily but intentionally, and values long-term relationships with clients and each other.

What You'll Do

Tax Planning (Primary Focus)

  • In collaboration with the client’s lead financial advisor, you will lead proactive, year-round tax planning conversations with clients — not just at filing time
  • Develop and model Roth conversion strategies, retirement distribution sequencing, and Social Security timing analysis
  • Advise clients on charitable giving strategies, including donor-advised funds, QCDs, and appreciated asset gifting
  • Provide guidance on trust, estate, and gift taxation, QBI deductions, and small business tax planning for business-owner clients
  • Prepare and present clear, client-friendly tax planning summaries and projections using our technology stack, including Money Guide Pro and Holistiplan.
  • Coordinate with the investment advisory team on tax-loss harvesting, asset location, and portfolio rebalancing decisions

Tax Preparation

  • Prepare individual federal and state income tax returns (1040), starting with approximately 50 returns and growing to ~150 over five years. This intentional client-to-advisor ratio is what allows the role to operate as a true planning practice rather than a production tax shop.
  • Manage filing deadlines, extensions, and correspondence with taxing authorities
  • Maintain accurate, organized client tax files and records

Collaboration & Client Relationship

  • Serve as the firm’s internal tax expert — a resource for advisors and clients alike
  • Build trusted relationships with clients as a core member of their advisory team
  • Coordinate with clients’ attorneys, accountants, and other outside professionals as needed
  • Participate in client review meetings and financial planning discussions where tax context adds value

Who You Are

  • CPA or EA credential required; CPA strongly preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in tax planning and preparation, ideally with high-net-worth individual clients
  • Strong command of individual income taxation (1040) and familiarity with trust (1041), estate (706), and gift (709) tax returns
  • Experience in a financial planning or RIA environment is a meaningful plus
  • Able to translate complex tax concepts into plain-language conversations that clients understand
  • Detail-oriented and organized — you can manage multiple client deadlines
  • Collaborative by nature; you thrive in a team environment and bring a service mindset to everything
  • Familiar with professional tax preparation software (UltraTax, Drake, Lacerte, or equivalent)

Compensation

  • Base salary: $85,000 – $125,000, commensurate with experience and credentials
  • Performance bonus opportunity tied to tax planning growth and client satisfaction
  • Flexible and Remote Work: This position combines in-office and remote work. The firm offers generous flextime and work-from-home arrangements, including during tax season, to promote a solid work/life balance.

How to Apply

Please submit a resume and a brief cover letter describing your experience with tax planning for individual clients and what draws you to a career in a financial advisory firm. Include a specific tax planning strategy you’ve implemented for a client – one where the outcome mattered beyond just the return. We review every application personally.
